Looser Aluminium Bronze 78 (LAB 78) – CuAl11Fe6Ni6 DIN EN 12163

This wrought material is an aluminium multi-material bronze, which is available from stock in the form of round bars or produced on customer request.
Looser Aluminium Bronze 78 is a construction material with very high strength properties, even at elevated temperatures; high permanent fatigue strength; good corrosion resistance against neutral and acidic, aqueous media as well as seawater; good resistance to scaling, erosion and cavitation.
The choice of alloys is made primarily according to the required strength properties. From this point of view, Looser Aluminium Bronze 79 has even higher values.
Hollow profiles from the same alloy group are primarily available from the continuous or centrifugal casting process in the form of tubes, cylinders or flange bushings under the trade name Looser Aluminium Bronze 78-1.

Example uses

  • Plain bearings with very high threshold loads, highly stressed bearings in toggle presses, eccentric presses and forging machines.
  • Suitable for plain bearings in hot operations due to high hot hardness.
  • Guide bushings, pressure plates, sliding blocks, ball sockets, wear parts.
  • Worm and gear wheels with very high loads up to medium speeds are a significant application.
  • Pressure and spindle nuts, bolts, shafts, valve seat rings.
  • Used in hydraulics as valve bodies, pistons, piston rods, seats, cones and control parts.
  • Internal parts of high pressure fittings and hydraulic valves with the highest pressure levels, hot steam valves, fittings for high water velocities.
  • Capacitor bottoms, jaws for resistance welding machines.

Machinability

With this tough material, based on machining brass CuZn39Pb3 (Ms58Pb) machinability can be assumed to be 20%.
Looser Aluminium Bronze 78 is well suited for forging in a temperature range of 800-950°C; this material is not suitable for cold forming.
The annealing temperature range lies between 650-800°C; stress relief heat treatment takes place at 310-400°C. The melting point is 1073–1082°C.
Looser Aluminium Bronze 78 is well suited for protective gas and electrical resistance welding. Not suitable for soft or hard soldering or for autogenous welding.

Sliding partners

Mating steel surfaces should be hardened and finely machined. The finer the sliding surfaces, the higher the expected service life. Good lubrication is essential.
